Understanding Christian Writerpreneurship: Are You a Writer or a Writerpreneur?

Upon first glance, this headline might seem a bit redundant. After all, isn’t a writer the same as a writerpreneur? The answer to this question is quite simple: no.

Over the years, I’ve come across numerous Christian Authors who desired to build a powerful writing career; yet they failed to understand that to have such a venture would require applying entrepreneurial and best business practices to their work.

For this reason, I want to help you determine whether or not Christian Writerpreneurship is for you; and by the end of this section, you will know whether you are a writer or a writerpreneur.

To begin, let me clarify the meaning of each term. According to the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (2010), entrepreneurs are distinctive from freelancers or small business owners.

Consider the term and its roots. “Entrepreneur” derives from the French word “entreprendre,” another word for “undertaking.” According to this same reading, a 20th century economist named Joseph Schumpeter elaborated on the meaning: It is one who creates or implements a change in the economy “by introducing new goods or new methods of production,” which can render other products or services obsolete[1]. Think of an entrepreneur as one who creates something that no one else has created, or one that has developed a product that makes other products in an industry useless.

An entrepreneur is one that will create a unique product or service that meets the needs of customers beyond what others have created. A conclusive definition of this term is also the following statement: “an individual that develops a new or improved product, service, or way of doing things that can exist independent of the creator, and bears the financial responsibility for risks in bringing their development to market.”[2]

Let’s explore another meaning of entrepreneurship. Being an entrepreneur involves “consistently thinking and acting in ways designed to uncover new opportunities that are then applied to provide value.”[1] In other words, entrepreneurs are constantly devising methods that will open new windows of opportunities that provide immeasurable value to the market.

When you couple your writing with entrepreneurship, then you are a writerpreneur, and this is the term I coined back in 2016 to help my clients better understand their position in God’s Kingdom. As a Christian Writerpreneur, you are using your God-given gift to develop new ideas, new products, and new services that benefit the market (whether the Christian or general market), and accepting all the risks and rewards that come with it.

To the contrary, if you only desire to construct books without seriously extending your opportunities in other areas, then you are simply a writer, a self-employed, small business owner of your authorship. And it is perfectly OK to be in this category.

If that is what you desire, then embrace it! You will find a number of people who claim to be entrepreneurs, when in fact they are small business owners, service providers, or strictly writers. One is not greater than the other, although at times it can feel the opposite. What is important is to identify what you want to be and cultivate that from the beginning. In doing so, you will make your life a lot easier.

In other words, if you know you only want to be a small business owner or a writer, then stick with that. Don’t stress yourself over figuring out ways of becoming a writerpreneur.

On the other hand, if you find yourself going beyond the limitations of small business ownership, then you may fall into the category of an entrepreneur or writerpreneur; and this will require more time, resources, and energy, but the rewards are outstanding when certain strategies are implemented effectively.

To give you an example of how this plays out, here’s my own story. When I first began my writing ministry in 2011, I simply provided freelance writing services to clients. I wasn’t looking to do much of anything else except writing.

But over the years, especially in 2015, my desire for expanding my business emerged. I soon developed an online university, an online church, and a series of books that all fit within the general mission of FKMinistries.

While I may have started as a self-employed writer in the beginning, my ministry has now expanded into writerpreneurship, because I am now providing new products and services that “uncover new opportunities,” which provide value to God’s people.

This is simply my example. Many of my clients have similar stories, although their ministries focus on other aspects of life. For example, one of my clients has a writing ministry that works with female ex-convicts. Another client has a writing ministry focused on missionary work. Another client has a writing ministry that will empower refugees. In each case, these writerpreneurs are using their books to create other opportunities that provide value to their ideal audience.

So, where do you fall in these categories? Do you simply want to write and create a business around that? Or do you find yourself almost obsessed with ideas and ventures that center around your authorship?

To help you determine whether you are a writer or writerpreneur, answer the following questions:

Writer vs. Writerpreneur Questionnaire

  1. When it comes to writing, do you see yourself as simply composing books and nothing else? Explain.
  2. When it comes to publishing books, is your focus exclusively on making sales from your books, or do you see yourself selling other products?
  3. When it comes to your authorship, do you believe in simply writing your books?
  4. When it comes to entrepreneurship, do you find this concept relevant to your authorship?
  5. When it comes to entrepreneurship, does the idea of adding more to your work as a writer seem over-the-top and unnecessary?

Once you have answered these questions, you will know where you stand as a writer or writerpreneur. Keep in mind that while I highly recommend that writers employ entrepreneurial endeavors to their career, no one is required to do it. But those who do engage in it are seeing dramatic, long-lasting results, and they are building a platform and audience that grows exponentially.

In the event that you already know that you are (or want to be) a writerpreneur, here are some steps you can take to begin formulating this venture.

  1. The first strategy is to devise a business plan, which will be discussed throughout this guide. This will be the most challenging part of getting started because it will require that you spend time thinking about what you want to be, what you want your writing or speaking career to look like, and where you want to go during the next few years. This is really the time when you want to conduct research on multiple topics such as business structure, finding your niche, networking, marketing, etc. This is also the point where you identify your brand and how you will convey this to your audience.
  2. The second strategy in becoming a writerpreneur is to discover a way to provide services or products to a specific market, and to create something that is new and unique to their needs. This is the essence of being an entrepreneur. Once you have thought about what you can offer, you should be able to construct an effective business or content plan that will guide you along the way to achieving your desired goals.
  3. The third strategy is to devise an online portfolio, website, and blog that will feature all of your work. If you’re a writer or speaker and you do not have an online presence, you are doing yourself a disservice. One of the best ways to have your services and products promoted to others is through a website and blog, which will house your online portfolio. There are a number of tools and resources that you can use in order to get this started. So, don’t waste any more time in trying to decide if this is the best course of action for you because it definitely is!
  4. The fourth strategy is to discover unique ways to market your services or products to companies, organizations, and private clients. This is especially important if you are considering freelance work as a way to generate more income.
  5. The fifth strategy is to create a regular schedule and routine that will allow you to perform your creative work as if it were a “9-5” job. The path of a writerpreneur is long and hard. While there are many perks to this field, it requires you to do more than what you initially thought. This business entails more than simply writing for someone or writing to help another person. You have to employ various strategies and techniques that will get your products into the rights hands. In order to do that, you must treat your authorship like a full-time career, giving it the attention and devotion it needs to accelerate.
  6. The sixth strategy is to make sure that you find a way to balance your professional and personal life. As I mentioned above, this business is a lot of work, yet it is so rewarding. But it’s important not to be consumed by the work. One of the benefits of working from home or working as a writerpreneur is that you can set and create your own schedule. Take advantage of that! If you want to relax for a few hours in the middle of the day, do that! Having balance is important and being able to manage this will help you to continue enjoying the work.

Now that you have an understanding of what goes into making a writerpreneur, you can determine whether or not this venture is for you. While you have the choice to simply write books and even write a blog, if you want to earn a substantial living using your craft, you must be willing to become a writerpreneur; and my online program, my books, and my one-to-one coaching services can help you with this.

Understanding the Power of Virtual Ministries: The New Wave of Revival and Reformation

What is a virtual ministry?

I'm often asked this question by several people, including ministers. Whenever they ask me, "What do you do for a living?" I tell them, "I help Believers build virtual ministries."

Most have no idea what I'm talking about, so here's what I tell them: "I help Christian Authors, Speakers, and Spiritual Leaders build virtual ministries that will change the world using the written and spoken word."

In other words, I help Believers who feel called to start a work using the online space to promote and spread the message God gave them.

I share with people that this is a part of the new wave of revival and reformation that is sweeping the nation.

Building a virtual ministry involves more than simply writing a book or having a physical church to spearhead.

It's about finding people from all over the world who are hungry for the message God deposited in such ministers; and creating an online home, hub, church, or community where each member can be fed on a daily basis.

You won't find many Believers today who will attend local churches every day to be equipped. Times are different than they were in early American history.

But you will find people online are will eagerly consume any word from the Lord as long as it's delivered to them consistently.

Here are a few articles that explain more about the role and purpose of online churches and ministries and the ways some people react to them:
  1. Some people find online ministries easily accessible, especially if they are unable to attend local churches.
  2. Some people are finding the online space as the perfect way to reach those who would never enter a traditional church.
  3. Some people find online churches to be anti-biblical, unauthentic, and ultimately "fake."
  4. Some people have not attended traditional churches in years and are looking for spiritual insight from different sources. Thus, online churches have become a viable solution.

As you can see, virtual ministries or online churches are becoming a norm in more ways than one.

FKMinistries, January 2018

Back in 2018, I launched FKMinistries as a concept to my audience on Facebook. I introduced it as an online network or church for Believers who are ready to engage in this end-time revival and national reformation.

I made my virtual ministry official after spending so much time on Facebook building my audience there. Because I talk a lot about conservatism and the lunacy of the Left, much of my content had been censored.

To avoid losing my audience--because Facebook and other social media platforms have the power to shut any page down whenever they want--I decided to set up my social network, an "online church," to keep my audience nearby.

As of today, after launching the official site in June 2018, we are now a company of 200+ members; and each week, I provide teachings based on the messages the Holy Spirit gives to me.

FKMinistries also houses my online school and classes for the members who want to learn more about certain topics such as Christian Writerpreneurship, conservatism, and building their own virtual ministries.

Our virtual church is obviously new, but we are growing; and we desire to be a place where our members can launch their works in the near future, because I'm the kind of leader who wants to see everyone contribute their gifts during this end-time revival and national reformation.

Virtual Ministries are Growing

When I teach my audience and clients about building powerful virtual ministries, there are some areas that I focus on exclusively. For example, I teach my members about:

  1. Creating and publishing books based on the message God gave them. In other words, I train people to take their stories—no matter how scandalous—and turn them into ministries of deliverance.
  2. Identifying the kind of people God wants them to minister to; and here's what I mean. It's very possible for someone like you to start a virtual ministry that focuses on women, youth, men, the elderly, etc. If you wanted to focus your ministry on a certain topic, you could do that as well. The idea is to clarify your message, start delivering it virtually, and watch the people come.
  3. Developing a service or other product that will continue to empower your ministry's members while generating income for the life of your ministry.
  4. And adding to one's virtual ministry each year so that more people are equipped.

That's the focus of FKMinistries.

There are other virtual churches that do things differently, just as there are traditional churches that are vastly different.

Now, you may be wondering what's the difference between launching a virtual ministry versus launching an online business; and to be honest, there isn't much of a difference except the message we convey.

It's not uncommon for me to share with my audience that my business and ministry intersect. I provide spiritual and practical teaching, and I have products--mostly digital ones--that provide more education to my members.

But such commonality should not make any Believer cringe.

Business is nothing more than bringing order, systems, and clarity to a work. Using such strategies helps to keep a ministry moving forward; and when you use the power of the written and spoken word, especially as a published author, you help establish more credibility in the online space. This next section will show you how to get this started as a new author or speaker who will eventually have a virtual ministry.

How to Start Building Your Business or Ministry around Your Authorship

When it comes to setting up anything of significance, it will first require that you make solid plans of actions. In this section, I want to help you get started in planning your venture as a new Christian Author or Speaker.

The Vision and Mission Statements

The first step you should consider as you prepare to write the Business Plan is to generate the vision and mission statement, which will encompass your purpose for creating your company or ministry. In addition, you may want to consider creating a motto for your business that will help customers understand your core values. Since the focus of this guide centers on creating a writing and speaking business, you will want to consider the reasons why you are entering this field. So, let’s begin by first identifying what is meant by the vision and mission statement.

The Vision Statement

The following definition derives from businessdictionary.com. According to the website, a vision statement is “an aspirational description of what an organization would like to achieve or accomplish in the mid-term or long-term future. It is intended to serve as a clear guide for choosing current and future courses of action.” Another definition of the term is as follows: “A vision statement for a company or organization focuses on the potential inherent in the company’s future, or what they intend to be…the vision statement is simply a description of what the company intends to be.” Just from reading these definitions, it is clear why having this statement is so important to the foundation of your company. You must possess a clear idea of what you want your company to look like in the future because this will pave the way for your company’s success.

To begin thinking about the vision of your company, consider the following questions: What do you want your business or ministry to look like five years from now? Ten years from now? What do you aspire to accomplish with your company and authorship? What problems will your company solve? What service will you provide that will outperform your competitors? How will your company change the world?

After you have taken the time to think about the answers to these questions, it’s time to record your thoughts onto paper.

The Mission Statement

A basic definition of a mission statement can be found at businessdictionary.com. It is “a written declaration of an organization’s core purpose and focus that normally remains unchanged over time.” It can “serve as a filter to separate what is important from what is not, clearly state which markets will be served and how, and communicate a sense of intended direction to the entire organization.” To discern between the vision and the mission statement, think of one as the cause and the other as the effect. In other words, “a mission is something to be accomplished whereas a vision is something to be pursued for that accomplishment.” As you think about your mission statement, be sure to include information that will demonstrate how your company’s goals will empower customers, employees, and owners.

Description of Author’s Brand

Many of us are familiar with professional branding. It involves the core values, principles, or truths behind an organization, product, or service. A brand strategy encompasses marketing techniques that help a system stand out from the crowd. It’s a phrase, a color scheme, a theme that tells others what that business entails. It’s a signal, alerting people of what they can expect to receive when they come to their business. In like manner, every successful author or speaker has established a type of brand for their work, one that differentiates one from others. And among secular authors, they have mastered this to the point that by simply saying one’s name, you are instantly connected with their brand (i.e. J.K. Rowland). As a new author or speaker, you want to have the same impact. So, start thinking of how you will create a brand that stands out from the crowd.

Description of Ideal Reader

One of the first lessons that you must apply to your new career is that you cannot speak to every single person and address every single need. It’s impossible for you to do this because you simply don’t have the time. Therefore, as you begin thinking about the kind of books you want to write, consider to whom you are writing and why.

The right people and the right audience are waiting for you. You don’t want to write books that are for everyone. Why? Because you will never take a stand for something. Readers want to engage in works that speak to them, that minister to them, that let them know they are not the only ones thinking the same thing about a topic. The more you speak your audience’s story, the more your audience will become loyal to you, your brand, and your works.
In this next section, I will teach you how you can prepare to launch your business or ministry once you have the plans in place.

How to Launch Your New Virtual Ministry and Business with Your Book

Once you have the idea to create a book, your next step is to begin marketing it, even at the idea phase. That’s what I mean by launching your new venture.

Typically, new authors do not begin promoting their books until after it has been completed. But this is the wrong strategy to implement. Instead, you want to start what I call the launch sequence, which includes three different promotion phases that onboard new readers to your new product.

  1. Pre-launch phase: Here is where you spend considerable time getting your audience prepped for your new release.
  2. Launch phase: This is where you present your product or service to the market. If you nail the pre-launch phase, you are sure to have sales on the day you launch.
  3. Post-launch phase: Most new authors and speakers miss the mark here. After they have launched their new book, they fail to follow up with other ways of promoting their works consistently so they receive ongoing sales. You can avoid this by having a plan in place.

To help clarify the launch-sequence phases, I will give you a simple example.

Pre-orders are a perfect way to ensure that when you’re ready to print your books, you have an audience that has already committed to buying them.

In order for you to see actual results from this pre-order strategy that I present, you must first have an audience full of eager readers and buyers.

This doesn’t mean that you must have a large following. You can accomplish this strategy with just 50 people.

To begin, you want to think about the launch day for your book. Be sure to give information about your upcoming book to your following. Construct marketing materials such as blog posts, book previews, video lessons, and more to get your audience excited about the new release. (Take note: This is the pre-launch phase.)

Once your audience has a better understanding of what you will offer, then you can start soliciting pre-order sales.

If you’re wondering if people will actually give you money before you’ve printed the book, they will as long as they trust you.

You can build this trust further by remaining transparent with your readers. And here’s how.
Let your audience know that you will only print your books based on presales and only for a limited time. This gives your audience a sense of urgency as well as exclusivity.

Give your readers another incentive to pre-order by telling them that they will receive a signed copy of the book and some additional gift. Whenever I do a pre-sale promotion, I offer complementary video training lessons, a FREE digital copy of my book, and a signed printed copy, anything to enhance the offer.

You can sweeten the offer by providing a special gift from the moment they pre-order. (You can decide what that gift will be, maybe a private coaching video, etc.)

Once you start generating pre-order sales, based on the retail price for your book, you can then use a portion of those sales to pay for your prints. (This is how you can avoid costly printing prices later.)

Pre-orders are a great way to build momentum for your launch, and they help you earn profit immediately.

In my school, I dive more deeply into this. Here’s a sneak peak of what my students receive, and you can be a part of it, too.

How to Scale Your Business and Ministry Seamlessly

Now, this next phase of your business or ministry will come years after you have proven to be of value to the market. This is the phase when you are ready to bring your product or service to the masses, but you want to do so in a way that will eventually give you more time and resources in the long-run.

The way this happens is when you learn to take all the lessons you’ve learned from your early years and begin automating your processes in an aggressive marketing effort.

This is what I teach my clients to do, and here’s how the model plays out in my advanced program called Scale for Profit.

Scale for Profit

The SCALE FOR PROFIT Model is a unique approach to scaling one's work to a wider audience by leveraging the power of the online space.

It combines the best strategies of book publishing, content marketing, automation, hiring and retaining talent, customer retention, social media marketing, and video marketing into one seamless approach.

The SCALE FOR PROFIT Model is broken down into multiple phases, which extend over a 12-month period.

The Importance of Having a Mentor or Coach

Let me begin this discussion with a clear definition of a mentor and coach.

  • Mentor: A trusted counselor or guide (merriam-webster.com)
  • Coach: One who instructs or trains (merriam-webster.com)

The term that I want to highlight based on these definitions is the word "guide."

A mentor is not one who uses her knowledge to make herself look good. Her role and function is to help her trainee achieve success.

One of the influencers I follow, Donald Miller, discusses this concept heavily within his online business, StoryBrand. Miller encourages businesses to step away from telling their own stories in order to gain customers, and to start telling the stories of their customers, who are essentially the heroes in the story.

And the same concept can be applied to mentorship.

When I'm working with my clients as a coach or mentor, one of the first questions I ask is, "What are your goals for your virtual ministry? And what is your vision for your writing career?"

I want to know where they see themselves, their books, products, or services five or ten years from now. I want to know as much about their vision, because the focus can't simply be on creating a great book. I want them to think beyond that so their works can have maximum impact on their audience.

These questions help me to better understand my clients, and from there, I craft a personalized coaching program that helps them manifest their vision.

This is what Miller means when he asks his entrepreneurs to "be a guide" in the customer's story. I'm simply here to lead them to their destiny; and once they've reached that place, then they can help others along their journey.

You will notice that mentorship and coaching involve elements of teaching. And I believe this is why this service comes naturally to me. I've been teaching people for more than 20 years.

Mentoring is not just about encouraging my clients or inspiring them with thoughtful suggestions; it also entails helping them develop a strategic plan of action for growth and success.

When you think of coaching in terms of sports, it's not enough that a coach tells the team that it can win. He must also tell his members HOW to win. And the same idea is applied when it comes to mentoring or coaching new Christian Authors, Speakers, and Spiritual Leaders who want powerful virtual ministries.

The Many Reasons Why Having a Mentor Will Take You Further in Your Virtual Ministry

So, now that you know what a coach and mentor are, here are some reasons why you should hire one that will specifically address your needs:

1.) Believers who hire a virtual ministry coach or mentor see greater success than those who don't have one.

If you asked me for the data on this statistic, I can't deliver it as of today. But I can assure you that this is a fact because it's what I have witnessed over the last several years. Writing a book is not often the hard part of building a virtual ministry; it's putting something together that will help build a career that becomes the challenge. And future Virtual Ministers who refuse to invest in a coach who can help them overcome this challenge often experience failure in their ministries.

I know this because I've had clients come my way who tried to enter this venture on their own and have yet to make any progress. But those who have taken on my coaching services have experienced eye-opening results. As I mentioned earlier, the point of mentoring is to be a guide and support. Therefore, as a coach to new Christian Authors, Speakers, and Leaders (for the purpose of launching their virtual ministries), I help them see the full potential of their work while assisting them in the development of their strategic plan.

2.) Believers who hire a virtual ministry coach experience phenomenal qualitative results.

In other words, there are elements of the coaching process that help authors become confident, bold, and courageous. This is not something that can be quantified, but it certainly adds to the positive effects of coaching. I have witnessed my share of enthused clients who were elated by the knowledge and education they received from my coaching.

Knowledge brings forth light, and that is not easily achieved on one's own. For example, while a writer may feel that she can discover everything there is to know about being a successful writerpreneur, in truth, she will only be limited by her current understanding. A coach will always bring so much more to the table, and that is truly valuable to the client.

3.) Believers who hire a virtual ministry coach are one step ahead of the average Christian Author, Speaker, or Spiritual Leader.

This statement is similar to what I have already discussed. You have to see yourself as a person who is hidden within a sea of millions of other aspiring ministers. Authors and speakers who make the investment into their own virtual ministry by hiring a coach will naturally surpass other average authors and speaker simply because they will obtain knowledge and wisdom that is not freely acquired.

This is why I emphasize to you and to my members in my network that you have to take this virtual ministry thing seriously; and you must see yourself as an anointed, professional Christian Author or Speaker if you want to thrive in this industry.

The only way that you can cultivate your professionalism is when you take the bold step and invest in your business by acquiring a mentor.

4.) Lastly, Believers who hire a virtual ministry coach demonstrate they truly care about their brand and their audience.

When it comes to creating great content for you and my other readers, I don't rely on my own wisdom and knowledge. I pull from the training I received in college and the knowledge I acquired through my observations and research over the years. Why? Because I want you to have the best. I don't want to give you watered-down material.

I recognize that your success is largely dependent on your ability to have access to empowering material that you can't find easily on the Internet. In like manner, every Christian Writerpreneur or Speaker who takes on a mentor proves that the business and the audience are important to him/her. He recognizes that for a small investment, the coaching can help him yield an unlimited supply of clients and customers.

Search for Your Mentor Today, and Start Working on Your Virtual Ministry

Here's what you need to take away from this guide: You cannot do without a coach or mentor.

You absolutely need one, and you need to add this element to your annual budget.

I want to mention one thing here, and that's not every coach is the same. You will find some mentors or coaches who claim to know how to do something when, in truth, they have not been in the game long enough to qualify as an expert.

I have seen this time and again: One person writes a book or lands a major speaking deal in one week, and then all of sudden, she is an expert on teaching others how to write a book in 7 days.

Don't invest in that. You want experience and you want quality. You want that coach to prove to you that once you hire her, then you can expect to receive clear results that will last a lifetime.

As it stands, building a virtual ministry is a new venture within the Christian world. In fact, I knew nothing about it until 2016 when the Holy Spirit asked me to launch a virtual Bible study. Since then, I've done my research, implemented best practices, and created my own virtual ministry that has reached tens of thousands of people worldwide; and I use my products and services as a method for generating wealth to keep it moving forward.

When it comes to my relationship with the Holy Spirit, I don't consider anything to be a coincidence. When He placed in my heart a desire to teach other Believers how to launch their own virtual ministries, I knew He was preparing me to meet Believers like you.

Whatever is about to come in the next five to ten years, the Lord wants us to be ready for it; and when more people are functioning in their gifts and calling, especially writers and speakers who have powerful messages inside them, then we will experience the greatest moments in history.

You are a part of this as well, Dear Believer, and I hope you see that right now.

Whatever your story is--no matter how scandalous it is--you can turn your life into a ministry of deliverance; and the virtual space is where you can make the most impact.

But you must be willing to receive the right training, and that comes when you are bold enough to hire the right mentor and coach for your virtual ministry.

Become a Beloved Giver Today and Experience the Power of Conscious Conservative Capitalism and How It Empowers Our Communities

Conscious Conservative Capitalism is a community-based, economic system rooted in spiritual laws. The individual contributes his gifts, talents, and skills to the market. He exchanges his goods or services for capital. He uses the resources to bless his immediate family so they are well-provided. Then he invests directly in his community with contributions that help the entire unit prosper.

Within The Felecia Killings Foundation, we practice this economic philosophy. All donations made to our organization help sponsor FREE and low-cost training to millions of rising leaders nationwide.

As a token of our appreciation for your generosity, you will receive lifetime access to our Donors Vault containing the Conscious Conservative E-Book Collection plus our audio e-courses (a $355 value).
