The Foundation's Leadership Guides
Empowering lessons that teach rising leaders about the 10 spiritual laws of Conscious Conservatism and how to use them in the social, political, and economic spheres
There was a man who had a desire to build a farm. He imagined it would be large and spacious, wide enough to house the many animals and food products that would signify his wealth. Without much planning, he set out to work. Day in and day out, he toiled at the foundation of the farm. But there was one small problem: He had not considered the cost it would take to complete such a task. He failed to properly prepare his plans, and as a result, his work was incomplete. For many months, people mocked him, jeering at his lack of accomplishments. Many folks tried to warn him that planning ahead of time would save him money and time; but he didn’t listen. As a result of his lackadaisical behavior towards the beginning process, his mission failed. If you are familiar with the Scriptures, then you know that I’m referencing the foolish builder that Jesus spoke of in Luke 14:28-30. This passage of Scripture, although in reference to one’s obedience to Christ, signifies a wonderful lesson that we can learn as leaders. Planning. Quite often, and I have seen this over the years, leaders refuse to sit down and “count the costs” associated with completing a work as important as building a platform. Now, I have to assume that if you’re reading this post, you are probably doing so because you want to learn how to be successful in this venture. But what I’ve discovered over time is that as much drive, passion, and zeal a leader has in the beginning, very few actually take the time to plan how to manifest their success. And that’s what I want to address in this article: the importance and value of creating a business plan for your venture. When I began working as a freelance writer and author, I made the mistake of not planning. I went into this venture without any clear direction, and I know for a fact that it hindered my progress. Back in 2015, when I finally decided to take my business more seriously, I knew I would have to construct a plan that would guide my way. And to be honest, I hated that idea. I didn’t want to deal with creating an Executive Summary or worry about Financial Projections. These terms “threatened” me, mostly because I failed to understand them. But I knew I wanted to take my company to another level; and that meant learning about business, no matter how long it took me. And I’m so glad I did. Over the course of nine months, I studied everything I could about starting an online business. I took advantage of the many free resources that are provided, and disciplined myself to understand the terms that were necessary for projecting long-term success. I did all this, even though I never felt like having a business plan as an author and leader was necessary. I did it because I believed strongly in my vision and my goals. But as we all know, faith without works is dead. No matter how much I believed I could accomplish great feats, I had to exercise my faith and learn what needed to be learned. The Rewards of PlanningBy December of 2015, I finally began constructing my business plan, one that would meet my needs. I realized if I truly wanted to see this dream realized, I would need to commit months, not just days, to careful planning. And it has paid off dramatically. I realize that in today’s culture, we want everything to be completed quickly. We want the wealth NOW. We want the manifested blessing NOW. We don’t understand that when it comes to time, God exists out of it. And if you want real success, you have to take your time with it and treat it as a treasure. You have to dive into the deep crevices of information to find the tools and resources you need to prosper. You have to wait on the Lord to connect you with the right people and the right influencers so you are not easily led astray. And there are a lot of people who will promise you quick success, but they won’t deliver. You need someone to tell you why slow and steady wins the race. You need someone who will be brutally honest and tell you that five years of working in the self-publishing industry is what brought her to this place. Why? Because when it comes to true success, it will never happen as quickly as you think. And it will never happen without planning and cost evaluation. Laying the Foundation for Your Leadership Platform Using a Simple, Solid Business PlanEvery structure needs a solid foundation; and as a Thought Leader, you must lay the groundwork for the vision you have. When teaching my clients about their own ideas for their platforms, I ask them to be as specific as possible regarding their vision, even detailing the kind of people God called them to empower. I ask them about their desires to walk in their calling full-time. And I ask them to visualize who they want to reach and how they want to empower their audiences. Now, your platform's plan is not complicated or dense like your traditional business plans. Instead, it is based on best practices for launching your work using the virtual space. Here are the areas your plan must address:
This blueprint is what my clients revisit throughout their training, because as they learn more about the virtual landscape (and how their books play into it), they can record their systems of operations that lead towards success. During this phase, leaders engage in extensive research regarding their book’s topic, their ideal audience, and how they ought to craft the RIGHT kind of book for their readers. When the foundation is laid, the book product, services, speaking engagements, and more finally have substance; and eventually, the virtual space comes to see your work as a powerful force among the most prominent influencers in the market. Build Your Plan the Right WayIf you have never considered the benefits of creating a business plan for your platform, I want to encourage you to do so. It will bless you tremendously. You will find that once your plan is in place, you will have clarity and focus you need for your venture. In Conclusion ...Thought leadership is a powerful method for elevating your platform and bringing your message to millions of people nationwide. But to be most effective, you will need proper training from an expert coach who has delivered the kind of results you desire.
