 Back in 2015, I secured my first remote contract with an online educational company to help them craft curriculum for their new program.This opportunity was a blessing to me, because I had recently given birth to my baby girl and I wanted the option of working from home. The contract was also my gateway into the virtual job market, which offered thousands of opportunities for mothers like me to deliver our gifts and expertise while also remaining true to what we value mostly: our social empires. Over the years, I developed a deep understanding of how to navigate this online space to build new connections, new networks, and new income streams. The more I dived into the virtual wonderland, the more I knew this market was where everyone could have a shot at winning economically. Since that time, I’ve watched the job market shift. After the Pandemic, more companies began offering their employees options for remote positions, especially after so many people realized the value of a true work-life balance. Even now, companies who disfavor remote work find themselves dealing with a more assertive workforce that’s willing to say no to them if it means they can’t have the comforts needed to perform their best. At the same time, we see so many people looking to fill positions, each one often submitting hundreds of job applications to numerous companies, only to be met with nothingness. While I haven’t been a part of the traditional job market in over a decade, I keep close watch of it. I have an online audience within the conservative political space that often speaks about the economic situations of today’s average American. As such, when I see new opportunities arise, I inform my Beloved audience; and then I teach them how to access conservative politics to protect what they build. Knowing how to claim these opportunities and secure them is most important, especially because of the rise of cancel culture: the use of social media to thwart a person’s job prospects. If you post something extremely controversial, people will not hesitate to find your workplace and “report” your online behavior to that company. If you have strong political viewpoints, you run the risk of losing future opportunities if a company holds values opposite of yours. In other words, the virtual market is quickly becoming the place where companies accept or reject prospective workers if their digital footprint is sketchy. But the inverse is also true. If your digital portfolio – consisting of educational blog posts, social media posts, books, etc. – amplifies your expertise, companies will begin seeing you as a thought leader in your industry, thus making it difficult to reject someone as valuable as you. The same principle can be applied if you currently work for a company you enjoy, and you want a promotion or elevation. By implementing best practices for effective thought leadership, you can make yourself more competitive. Let’s use an example here. Say you work for a college or university as an administrator, but your ambitions are to become president. How would you demonstrate your ability to receive and maintain that role? Naturally, you would venture the traditional route that required whatever credentials are needed (degrees, etc.). But everyone else is doing that, right? So, how can you stand out? Simple: by becoming a thought leader in that educational field. Your thought leadership can take the form of:
The list can go on and on, depending on the nature of your industry. You can elevate your digital resume by establishing yourself as a thought leader. And I know this from experience, because it’s what I’ve done in the political space. I’ve also trained my leader-clients to do the same in their industries. At best, think of thought leadership as the new “resume” of today. Millions of people will submit one-page resumes. But only a few will build an online leadership platform that makes their knowledge, expertise, and experience invaluable to the market. So, consider this option today, Beloved.
