How to Heal Relationships that Have Been Broken by Politics Using the Law of Forgiveness

Obama.

​Name any politician and observe your internal reaction just at the mere mention of their names.

​Politics has always been a divisive topic, and obviously so when we consider how power is wielded based on which ideology controls the political landscape.

Growing up, I’ve always been Evangelical. In our space, we do not separate politics from our Christian religion. We are primarily Republican. Our unique characteristics, however, are often shaped by race and ethnicity. Given this fact, I’ve always identified as a Black Republican and a Conscious Black Conservative.

​My political leaning is shaped by my relationship with my father, a Black Republican who entered this space during the early 1980s. Evangelicalism and Republicanism are all I know. And my conservative political convictions have only been sharpened the more I’ve been elevated in this public political arena.

But my politics differ from that of my extended family. The majority of my aunts, uncles, and cousins are moderate Democrats. The Democrat Party is their chosen political infrastructure, and given the history of what Republicans have done to alienate Black American voters, I can understand why.

My relationship with my extended family is important to me, even if I find myself unable to spend as much time with them as I’d like. I love them. Some of my aunties are like second mothers to me. Some of my cousins are closer to me than my siblings. We have mutual respect for each other, regardless of our political differences. I strive diligently to maintain that peace, because politics will never be more important to me than them.

Working with conservative voters over the last 7 years has shown me how much my familial situation is an anomaly in this political sphere. In Twitter Class, where I delivered the bulk of my teachings at one time, I watched as husbands abandoned their wives for Trumpism; parents destroyed relationships with their children because of the MAGA movement; and family members died with grudges in their hearts simply because they could not fellowship with people who didn’t align with their politics.

As a result, I have spent the last several months encouraging and prodding Beloveds to heal their marriages, to mend their broken relationships with their children, and to stay hidden in God’s Kingdom because politics will never be worth it.

As Believers, we can never expect to experience pure revival and reformation if we can’t even discern when we have made politics our new god.

Knowing my current audience is primarily Evangelical, some will argue that we have a spiritual and moral obligation to be active politically, and to that simple point, I agree. But what we’re witnessing is something far more sinister and destructive than simply voting our Evangelical convictions. I am specifically pointing to a darker issue, one in which we have exalted politics over our first ministry: our family.

Therefore, the first line of defense to get us back on track is to put into practice the Law of Forgiveness and Reconciliation. This means acknowledging the wrong we have done to our spouses and children and asking them to forgive us. This also means applying forgiveness to ourselves for making ludicrous decisions that facilitated these destructive outcomes.

Beloved, if you find yourself at war with your loved ones over politics, ask yourself is it worth it.

Is it worth it to lose your marriage over a politician who does not know you, does not pray for you, and most certainly does not care about the health and strength of your union?

Is it worth the cost to lay down your life for a sole being who would never lay his life down for you?

Is it worth it to abandon your role as a good parent just to spend your days coddling a politician, making excuses for him when you’d never allow your own children to make the same mistakes without proper punishments?

Is politics worth the cost of your family when God has given you a beautiful union and children?

Or is there a better way?

Consider these questions today, Beloved, and ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom to know how to move forward. Whatever He tells you to do, do it. Then determine within your heart to be a vessel used for God’s glory and not the glory of your politicians.

Your spouse and children will thank you for it.
